I wrote this note in 1996 as a "Ladybird Guide" for people who don't necessarily have prior technical knowledge of the subject. It covers a lot of ground, from fundamentals such as frequency, to advanced systems such as Digital Terrestrial Television. Full and accurate descriptions would occupy thousands of pages so inevitably the subjects are covered in a superficial way, but hopefully the salient points are reasonably clear for the reader who needs an overview. There is plenty of scope for bringing it up to date, but I think that it still serves as a reasonable introduction to the subject. I hope that engineers reading this will forgive the lack of technical depth. I welcome feedback, including corrections and suggestions for improvement.
