David Sandbrook: A tribute by Bert Gallon

David Sandbrook’s death was very sad news. I had known him from the early part of our BBC careers at the Woofferton and Wenvoe transmitting stations, and we kept in touch before later working together in Transmission Headquarters. He obviously enjoyed his engineering roles at transmitting stations, but it was inevitable, given that he was a natural leader and organiser, that he would become a manager. His management style was to have staff working with him, rather than for him, advice and guidance was always available, and staff were encouraged to develop their skills and to take the odd risk in doing so. David’s management skills were also evident in the contributions that he made to the general work of Transmission and to a number of specific projects. I was particularly grateful for the part he played in the successful reorganisation of the Transmission Operations and Capital Projects departments and the relocation to new headquarters at Warwick. He made things happen, relished new and novel problems, and any task passed to him would be carried out efficiently and without fuss. David was a highly valued colleague, who was also great company.
